Course Overview

This course has a contemporary approach, enhanced by enquiry-based teaching methodology and combining a high-level grammar and vocabulary syllabus with 21st century skills. Our course offers students plentiful opportunities to develop their reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills effectively. Oral practice of the new language is paced carefully in controlled practice and freer practice stages, giving them a real purpose for sharing information and ideas. Opportunities for purposeful listening are provided and reading skills are given emphasis with extra reading practice provided by the Extensive Reading texts. Writing skills development builds slowly from word-based to sentence-based production and progresses in terms of challenge from term to term.

Leaning Objectives

The Starters course uses the foundation built in Junior A and develops the students’ vocabulary of everyday situations by adding practical language to make it more meaningful. Grammar is presented in a story-based and character-driven context to highlight meaning. Clear models are provided for follow-up activities in which students combine the vocabulary while practicing the grammar to reinforce and consolidate the new structures. As a global course for English in the 21st century, this course develops the skills students need to succeed in the thriving information age. Most importantly, it offers plentiful opportunities to become effective listeners, speakers, readers, and writers with the aim of developing strong skills of communication.

The language and skills practiced in our Starter course has been shaped in line with the requirements of Cambridge Pre A1 Starters exam.

Method of Assessment

In a high-level course with fast-paced syllabus and very concrete aims for achievement, recycling and review of language are essential. We give great importance to these aspects of language learning through systematic recycling of all core language which is revised in a variety of different contexts. Students’ progress is then evaluated through formal testing, ongoing assessment, and self-assessment. Formal testing is conducted through vocabulary tests, unit tests and progress tests. At the end of the academic year, there is an end-of-year test (TET Together English Test)  used to report on the students’ overall progress of the course level. Students. also have the opportunity to take an external examination through the British Council, called Young Learner Exams – Starters.

At the end of the academic year, students will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment from Together English Language Centre. The TET certificate will be endorsed by our Academic Director.
